What is blood pressure?
Blood pressure is a key indicator of heart condition. Your heart is a muscle that constantly pumps blood around your body, and blood pressure describes the forces on the walls of your blood vessels at different times.
Blood pressure is measured in millimeters of mercury (mmHg) and expressed using two numbers such as 122/74 mmHg. This can be expressed in other ways, such as “122 over 74”.
Systolic blood pressure is the first number and represents the pressure in the arteries when the heart beats. Diastolic blood pressure is the second number and indicates the pressure in the arteries when the heart is resting between beats.

What is hypertension?
Hypertension or HTN, is where the force of the blood against your artery walls is consistently high. The increased pressure can put strain on your heart and blood vessels, which may cause health problems later in life.
Hypertension can be caused by lifestyle choices such as diet, alcohol, and smoking, but it can also be the result of diabetes, kidney disease, or hormonal imbalances. Certain medications may raise your BP.
What is a healthy blood pressure level?
A normal blood pressure for adults is less than 120/80 mmHg. The ideal blood pressure will change according to age, gender, and other factors. Your physician can recommend the best blood pressure for you.
Your ideal blood pressure may increase with age, so a 70-year-old may have a blood pressure of 135/70 mm Hg and be perfectly healthy for their age. Ask your physician or healthcare provider what your goal blood pressure is!
Hypertension increases your risk of serious health conditions such as:
- Heart Attacks
- Strokes
- Kidney failure
- Vision Loss
- Heart Failure
- Aneurysms
Why hypertension is dangerous
